JLIA was established in 1986 as a comprehensive group to encompass all industries from manufacturing of leather as a material and leather goods to retailing them. Currently, there are 23 active member groups related to leather goods. As a natural material that has both excellent functionality and natural texture, leather has provided possibilities and attractiveness to consumers. Even within the fashion world, where the market and needs change at a rapid pace, leather has gained foothold and attained its status as an essential material.

JLIA supports the improvement and development of the leather industry, working with people involved in domestic and foreign leather industries, while making efforts in various business areas necessary for contributing toward the formation of enriched lifestyle and culture for consumers. The association also holds the Japan Leather Award (mentioned below) as a way to nurture human resources for the leather industry.
